When you're not carving up the mountain there is still plenty to see and do in our local area

An onsen is my top pick for a day off the mountain and we have three great options to chose from Madarao No-Yu is my absolute fav with indoor and outdoor pools and two different saunas plus a fabulous its a great little escape. The Madarao Kogen also has indoor and outdoor facilities or if you want a little privacy then Silk in offer a private outdoor cave that you can book.

If you still want to be on the snow but those legs need a day off Tangram offer a lot of other fun snow activities, take the family on a snowmobile tour they have very affordable little kids snowmobiles which are super cute, or have a go at sledging, tubing or even snow rafting.

Madarao Mountain Resort itself is a small village but don’t be mistaken there are plenty of fabulous places to eat tucked away. From local Japanese to hearty Western or fresh Vietnamese there is something for everyone.

    After a once in a lifetime excursion? Then don’t miss seeing these beautiful creatures loving life and lazing in the steamy hot spring waters. The snow monkeys are only 1 hour away but you will want to allow a full day. There are plenty of tours available that offer guiding with lunch included if your happy to spend $$$ or you can DIY on a local bus from iiyama station.

  • Snow Huts Kamakura Village

    Snow Huts kamakura village

    Open from late January to early February these lamp-lit snow huts offer a delicious and unique dining experience. The Kamakura festival happens the second weekend of February and features live music and fireworks. Bookings are essential. see website for info and how to get there

  • Local Onsens

    Take a trip to the infamous township of Nozawa Onsen. Steeped in rich traditional Japanese culture, it has over thirteen public bathhouses available. Most are indoor, but if outdoors is more your style, check out this link for great spots in our region.
